Four Indians wore sentenced to terras ranging from eighteen months to two years, for abetting a widow to become suttee, before fifteen hundred ' spectators. The prisoners were terrified ’ into helping the woman to commit suicide on her husband’s funeral pyre, because she threatened to invoke curses on them.
