Tho State of California hit the locks while travelling at full speed, tearing the greater portion of tho bottom out cf the vessel. She sank in a few minutes. Forty of tho crew and forty-three passengers escaped in heats, hut the others were drowned, tho majority being in tho cabins. The disaster occurred in daylight, but tho vessel sank ton quickly to allow many rescues to bo made.
