Gidliug has filled the vacancy. The Anchor Company’s steamer, Kennedy, is due at Wellington to-day from Nelson, and will sail in the evening for Nelson and-West Coast. •The Canterbury Company's steamer Breeze, will load'at Dunedin on Saturday,at Tinifiru on Monday, and at Lyttelton on next Tuesday for Wellington and Wanganui. The Union Company’s chartered steamer Canada Cape, is at present loading irozen meat and general cargo at Sydney for San Francisco and Vancoiiver. She is expected to arrive at San Francisco abo lit September 21, and subsequently she proceeds to Vancouver. During the second week of October the Canada Cape will commence loading at Vancouver for New Zealand ports. She then goes to San Francisco to complete. Departure will be taken from the latter for Wellington, about the end of October, and th Canada Capo shoud put in an appearance at Wellington towards the end o! November or beginning of December. After discharging part cargo here she proceeds on to Sydney. In view- of the great trouble caused the desertions of seamen from oversea liners in New Zealand and Australia, a case quoted by the London “Shipping Gazette”, is of considerable interest, and should serve-as a warning to deserters. At East Ham Court, London, Michael O'Hare, a seaman engaged on the steamship Belgic, was charged with wilfully deserting his ship at' Melbourne. Mr Richards, who prosecuted for the White Star Line, said .O'Hare was engaged for Q voyage to Australia and back. °on arrival at Sydney on December lust, he deserted, but a few days later returned and apologised. He wa's taken back on his contract, and worked as far as Melbourne, where he deserted again. On January 7 he was found coming back on the steamship Pakeha, belonging to the Shaw. ■ Bavill, and Albion Line. In consequence of his desertion the company was- put to an expense of .£6 19s Bd. The. sum of ,£l2 2s 4d was due to defendant from the steamship Pakeha. The Bench ordered defendant to pav the ,£6 19s. Sd, with court costs, 4, and £1 Is solicitor’s feo.
