Press Association.—Telegiauh, Copyright CAPETOWN, July’ 24. Obituary—Samir, Minister of Railways in Union Ministry. The Hon. J. W. Sauer, M.L.A., was Minister of Railways and Harbours for United South Africa since 1910, and Minister of Agriculture since 1912. He was u lawyer and a politician, and was ex-Com-missioner for Public Works in the Cape Ministry. Ho was the son of a. Magistrate in the Orange Free Stale, and received his education at the South African College. Ho practised his profession for some years, and then entered Parliament, when he became a follower of Sir Cordon Sprigg until 1876. He was Secretary for Native Affairs under Sir Thomas Seanlau, 1881-81; Colonial Secretary under Mr Rhodes, 1999; loader of the Opposition till 1896. He had been elected six times as the representative of Aliwal North, and refused a knighthood.
