'flio debate was veiy well carried through and the Kev. k. H. Iladford, who acted as judge, complimented the teams on their matter, and’their maimer,- Th'J idtirmative side had secured 287 marks, the negative 100, but as there were (ux. speeches delivered on the aHimi a tier side uud only three on'the negative, the latter were at a disadvantage and lost by about du points. ' Mr Herbert Grinstead acted as chairmen, and in closing the debate, expressed tie Literary Society's thanks to Mr. Uadiordjor acting as judge and congratulated the debaters o.i tuo’r behaviour and also in the very able way _ they had presented their arguments. It was nard.y u subject upon which a direct negative could by taken, hut he was strongly ox opinion that their educational value had been greatly over-estimated. .V hearty vote of thanks vraa proposed to Air Iladford and Air Grinslcad, respectively by Mr Allan, seconded by Mr. Voyce, and carried with acclamation. The Kev. Iladford responded, and the meeting closed with tin Benediction.
