THE CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. The chairman, in moving t!.o adoption of the report and Ivalance-nheet, *aid that in Australia, South Africa and America the game was more than satisfactory, and as far as New Zealand was concerned, it had progressed on sound, lines. The bulk of the players in the Dominion were actuated liy a (mo spirit. He had had the privilege ot witnessing a number of the interpuovincial matches last year, and ho had seen fine football and fine players, and when the New Zealand’team came to he selected this year, he was convinced that they would have a side that would compare more than favourably with those of the past. It was a matter for congratulation that the long standing dispute with Hie Non - South Males Union had nowbeen settled, and the interchange of visits would he resumed this season. He thought this would do a groat deal ol good far the game in New Zealand. J uniting-' to the lualnncctehiceti, the l.i'sfpr the season wen £1194., Of tins is Gd was affiliated to the visit of the American University team, and really dated bank for a couple of rears., thus making the actual loss £‘3GG 19s Hid on the reason. Then there was the North v. South Island’match and the country teams matches, which actn<ilh ivonght tV» loss on tho sonsou’s .amrat'ons to £4B.

their credit balance was tli.tlii. hut at. the present time it stood at £10,021. which was a fairly considc.rahlo reduction. If they prri.eeedrd at this rate. th,o Union would ne in the same position as it was some yours ago In any ordinary commerma. institution, sound finance was held to mean living Vithin income, and he hoped the delegates and the. Manage-

ment Committee would Lake Uveso'matlers into consideration. It -was, of course, a fact that they lost £BOO over the American University toiir, but he hoped' thus would bo recovered by a visit to America in the near future. J'or a long time bo bad advocated that a team should go to America in pruleronoo to a longer tour. Mr. Mhcassey seconded the motion. Mr Woods wnd the executive had done very well, but they might have (lout oetter in the matter of funds. Ho dal .not think that it was, sound finance to lend money to public bodies at call at a low rate of interest, when they neght get a good deal more by putting u in other ways. He considered that the country teams tour should he abolished,- and they .should inc-i-nri'-l the schools grant. Regarding expelled persons it had been promised by the Union that they would get the English Union to remove those disqualifications, but nothing bad been done. He thought the Management Committee should take the sub-unions more into their confidence.

Mr E. Wylie pointed out that thn Management Committee were restricted by the delegates. Fie agreed there should be wider powers of investment, but_ their hands were tied. Mr Isaacs aakl the funds were invested pa sound lines. Mr Wood?-; was one of the members who moved for the Southland Union to have, a large sum at the same interest as the -building society charged. . Mr. Smyth (Hawke’s Bay) said that his union suggested that trophies such as cans should be given to encourage school football.

Mr Dev thought; the local unions should help to foster the game among school children in their districts. Air \V. Perry endorsed Air Dey’s remarks. He pointed out that" throe years ago £2OO had been voted for school football, and at the following meeting it was found that some unions had only spent half the amount allocated Then it was reduced to £IOO at Hie fallowing ■annual meeting, ami last year raised to £1.30. Air Cl, H. Alasnn (Canterbury) deprecated the idea of trophies, and said the sooner they we.ro done away with the better for the game. If a Hag was given the winning team,-with the name of the team inscribed on it, it would he just as much appreciated as a leaden cup. The report and balance-sheet was adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
