Wandering Dogs at Conville

' . ... TO THB EDITOR. Sir,—l notice that there have boon several alleged cases of sheep-worrying and dog-poisoning in the Gonvilic district. Now, sir, as a lover of our canine brother, I should like to point out that there are more does in Gonvilic wondering at large than would fill the entries in a decent dog show. 1 hare one very fine specimen particularly in mind, a brmdle and white greyhound, which has done moro damage to my garden and which has carried off more legs of mutton than ho is worth, many times over. Now, sir, this is very trying, particularly to one who. owns a gun. However, to bp serious, surely owners of dogs should keep them under control, and not lot them wander at largo. If a dog is worth owning bo is worth, a collar and chain.—l am. etc., CAN Id CAVEAT. May 7, 1913.

By the uninitiated an ice cream stall on the corner of the street is not gceiirally regarded as “a gold mine,” but a most surnrising estimate of tho profit to bo made by the retailing of ice cream was given in an Adelaide Court last week, when an ice cream vendor claimed damages from a milkman for breach of contract. The claimant alleged that, as the result of the milk he had ordered on Good Friday not being delivered, materials to tho value of 13s lid, which lie had prepared, were spoiled, and he was deprived of the opportunity of selling ice. cream that'afternoon and evening, and consequently sustained a loss nf M ].os. The- opposing counsel exnrcssod surprise that tho profit should be estimated at such a high figure, hut his Honor remarked that in a recent ease ho bad had evidence that tho profit from retailing ice cream was astonishing. A letter of congratulation was forwarded by tile Australian Chinese Association recently to Dr Morrison, congratulating him on his appointment to the position of adviser to the Chinese Government, and the president of the Association (Mr Vinson Lee) received a reply from him by thjp last mail, thanking the members for their good wishes. “It is indeed gratifying to me,” Dr Morrison writes, “to learn that my appointment has met with the approval of my fellow citizens in Austra!it. I.'only hope T will he able to do work that wall justify my appointment. I have taken up my new work full of confidence in the future of China. In the course of the last few years I have visited >vcry province of her vast territory except Tibet. It is impossible to travel' in the interior and to witness the amazing relourccs of tho country, and the energy and industry of the ncoplo, and not to be inspired with confidence in the future. ‘Then, in tho course of time, I return to Australia, I trust that I shall he able to ’eel that I have done something, however 'mall, in assisting in the development of a country in which the best part of my ’ife has now been spent, and for whose people I have entertained the warmest ? cclings of respect and freindship.”
