WORKERS’ DWELLINGS.
SYDNEY SCHEME CHEAPER,
SYDNEY, April 26. Referring to the operations', that have been carried out in Now Zealand undpr the Workers' Dwellings Act, and contrasting then! With similar operations in New South Wales, the Sydney Morning Herald states:—‘‘According to a‘ Government return/ 2R workers' • dwellings' havovbocu erected in Auckland, the sattio number in Wellingt on, and in Christchurch It: In other towns houses havii been erected, or are projected. ‘ These are built of wood, generally, Snd the rents are fixed at from Its lOd per week to 13s lOd, fok an average of font to five rooms. This rent includes fire insurance, but not rates. The. DaCeyvilio experiment in Now South Wales has. Since July list, built more houspS. than all the New Zealand houses takentogether, and even in substantial brick and stone it has been found practicable to fix the .rents at from Its 6d to 16s, including rates, insurunoei and sinking fund.;- Probably the greater length of life of the brick house, and therefore the longer term of the .sinking fund period, has enabled .the Sydney Housing Board to keep the rents for brick houses down."
