SILVER WATER BEND.—The Rangitikei County Engineer reported lire river bank protection works at the Silverwater bond oa the Mimgaimihu-Eordell Road, up the Waugaehu River, suggesting tint groynes be erected' to divert the current from the foot of the cliff at the corner. — it was decided to have the work’ (estimated to cost about .£R!U) in band at once, and to ask the Government for a grant. The matter of getting the work done was loft to the chairman and the engineer. It was also decided to thank Mr Muir, the engineer, for his report. Engineer’s Report. The engineer submitted the following report:— Maugawhero Riding.—Contractors are making good progress. 11. Titter should complete his metalling contract at Kakatalu at the end of the present week, in tliis pit the metal for a short distance was rather inferior, but is now of much better quality. It. Richardson is making fair progress with'his work, and 1 would recommend that a first progress’ payment bo made on the second contract, ‘lomsctt and Stokes have made a start with their contracts. Metal and Clay in Sandy Cuttings.—in connection with this work, i nave arranged with the contractors, wnilc stripping the pit, to supply some clay blinding at Is lid per yard. Tins clay was used in blinding a part of the main road that was iu a very loose state. I also arranged with Mr J. Hogg to put out ‘l-6 yards of gravel at a cost of X! 6s. This metal was urgently wanted at the approaches to the Mataongaonga and Kukutu bridges. Mangamahu Riding. Metalling contracts are completed in this riding. The roads are in fair order, though the metalled portions are in a very loose state, and there is a portion of the new metal that has yet to be broken. When this is done I will then have all the surfacemen engaged on general maintenance. 'The mile-stones are, I understand, completed for this and the Maugawhero Hidings, and 1 hope shortly to got them in position. Ruriia Riding The metalling contracts are completed in this riding, and the surfaceman is engaged trimming up incutt and breaking stone. There is a considerable amount which will require to he raked together and blinded. Kaitoko Riding.—H. Titter is making good progress with his contract. I have arranged with him to take out clay blinding on new metal between Marybank ami Kaitoke Road. Mr Higgle and I went over that portion of the No. 3 Lino under your control. Ou this road one of the bridges opposite the Chinamen’s gardens requires re-dcoking, the timber being so much worn ■ that it is very unsafe, otherwise the bridge is perfectly sound. There is also a quantity of willows which will require cutting before the wet season comes on, as- these stop the flow of water in the lowlying places in heavy weather. If these were cut and removed they would not only let the water away more freely, but would also let more, sun on the road. This piece of road will also require patehng with metal in various places. Mr Hogg is at present carting metal over it, and it would be perhaps as well to leave the repairs until such time as he has completed his contract.
