MARTON NOTES.

DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER. CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW. (So'ecial to “ Chronicle.”) MARTON, May 17. A very old resident of Rangitiked in Mr Charles Blackwell passed away at his residence, Marton, last night. Deceased was seventy years of age. He was an old Maori War veteran, and took part in the Parihaka expedition. He has been a great sufferer lately. A widow, married daughter (Mra J. B. Barrington) and son (Mr J. G. Blackwell), are deft to mourn their loss. The Marton Chrysanthemum Show was opened this afternoon under auspicious circumstances, the show of this favourite flower being very fine. The blooms would havo done credit to any metropolitan show r , but Air James Gibson, of Upper Tutaonui, simply “scooped the pool,” his contributions to the show carrying off first honours in every class. In order to offer every opportunity to chrysanthemum growers, the date of the show was altered, arid it was found yesterday to have affected the other dart of tho exhibition very considerably, there being no entries of | cactus dahlias. Though the entries on I the whole are fewer this year, the | quality has improved, and generally ■ speaking the show is a great credit to : the town, and affords ample demonstration of tho capabilities of the district. There were some fi.no exhibits of vegetables, but owing to lack of accommodation t hey were not shawm off to advantage. Patrons were treated to tho sight of a few carrots, cabbages, etc., ! just inside the entrance door, and then I j in tho main halll other exhibits wore j to be found. If concentrated, the exi hibiton would have been a splendid I one; in fact, authorities state that the vegetable class this year proved a record in every respect. Home industries were weak. The officials worked hard, and are deserving of praise for tho oomI pleteness of the arrangements.
