From a betting point of view the favourite combination for the Wanganui Steeplechase and Century Hurdles is Continuance and Whakaweira, coupled with Paisano and The Native. Frank Lind, the well-known (local horseman, has been engaged to ride Tho Native in the Century Hurdles and Whakaweira in the Wanganui Steeplechase. The gelding Cuiragno, who won the Grand National Hurdle race in 1906, w as sold tho other day by auction in Auckland for tho very modest sum of £3. Paul Valmar, who was recently sold for 2(1 guineas in Victoria, was an experiment in in-breeding, as his Bire Wallace, (savs the “Squire”) is a son of Carbine’s, and his dam Da Carabine was also fathered by Carbine. From a galloping point of view the mating of La Carabine and Wallace was of no value, for Paul Valmar, who is now a five-year-old, has proved a frost at the racing business.
