THE DREDGE MANCHESTER.
A FRUITLESS SEARCH. (United Press Association.—Copyright.) llreeived May 17, 9.40 p.m. SYDNEY, May 17. A wireless message from the steamer Eden says that the search for the dredge Manchester has been so far fruitless. ANOTHER SEARCH TO BE MADE. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 17. it is almost certain that another search will bo made for the missing dredge Manchester. The Minister of Marine, Hon. G. Laurenson, told a representative of tho “New Zealand Times” to-night that ho was hopeful that H.M.S. Encounter, which will leave Auckland for Sydney in a day or two, will go somewhat out of her course to look lor the dredge, Tho Minister said that at his request tho Secretary for Marino had interviewed Captains Black bum, Smith and Post on the subject. and found that though they feared the Manchester was no longer above water they believed there “was just a chance'that she had become disabled and drifted to the northward. They were in favour of the commander of tho Encounter being asked to take a more northerly course than is customary, and His Excellency the Governor would bo asked to make representations to the warship’s commander with a view to tin's being done. The Minister had no doubt that tho request would bo acceded to. The drift he f ween here and Sydney was all to tho northward, and it was still possible that the dredge had boon carried a long wav off Mio regular course followed bv inter-CoL « : a1 vessels.
