BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

A committee mooting was held on Monday night in llio Borough Council Chaml)or.j, Ah’ A. Hatriek providing. The following letter was received by tne secretary from Mr J. T. Stewart. —Dear Sir,—As 1 am not able at present to take any active part in the work of the society, 1 think it best to resign as one of the vice-presidents and as a member of the committee. 1 think I may say 1 have done my share of tile work, and will always continue to take an interest in the Beautifying Society and will be willing to assist in any way I can at any time. — Yours faithfnllv, ,T. The president (Mr Hatriek) referred to the great help Mr .Stewart had rendered to the society in the past and the society could ill afford to lose his valuable help and advice. It was proposed by Air Habbage and carried unanimously that Mr Stewart be elected an honorary vice-presi-dent, and would he welcomed at any of the meetings he was able to attend. The following were elected as an executive: —Messrs Hope Gibbons, T. Allison. A. Doig, (lie president (A. Hatriek), and secretary (F. ,1. Walker).

Never in the history of the society has so much enthusiasm and interest been shown in the work as was shown last night, and from the speeches of the gentlemen representing the different districts, great things : are expected this coming season.

Mr Crosswoll, representing Cast loci iff. explained that his branch contemplated advancing the work considerably in his district, and a lot of tree planting was to bo done.

Messrs Benefield, Hooper, and Bmvater, representing Gonvillc, spoke in glowing terms of the work to bo undertaken in (heir district. They were prepared 1o take their enals oil and outrival even the older branches.

Huvie Hill was represented by Messrs Cohen, Boyd, and Hardy, who submited a plan of work to be undertaken by their branch. Should this rdan be carried out in its entirety fine displays mav bo expected there this next summer. St. John's Hill, represented by Messrs Burnet. Babbage, and Hoig, is going in more lor tree-planting, and it is expected this year will see many thousands of young trees added to the Virginia Late reserve. ’The president pointed' out that this reserve in s-ears to come will outrival even the famous New- Plymouth recreation ground.

Mr Beaven, the secretary of the Wanganui Last branch, submitted plans of (be work in progress and contemplated this year. He explained the many difficulties tsi be met with in the work undertaken by his branch, and the urgency of the work being completed at once (o a point above the new bridge, as when this bridge is completed there is no doubt that the walk between the two bridges will be the finest in Wanganui.
