NOT UNDERSTOOD

Press Association.—Telegraph.—Copyright Ecceived November 17, 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, November 17. Mr Milward, manager of the Pacific Cable Company, referring to tho cable report that a firitish-Cauadian syndicate had purchased Fanning and Washington Islands, explains that what it evidently means is that a syndicate has acquired estates co-estensive with the area of the islands, but that cannot bo the case. Fanning Island, where the Pacific Cable Board secured a plot for a landing station, is vested in them for 50 years. Such acquisition would not alter the nationality of the islands, therefore he fails to see any international significance.
