YOUTHS AND LIQUOR.

A LICENSING ACT ANOMALY

(Per United Frees Association). CHRISTCHURCH, July 10. A sixteen-yoar-old boy was before tho Court this morning charged with disorderly behaviour. The evidence showed that accused and his companions took it in turns to buy beer on Saturday nights, and as they drank the beer off licensed premises tlie police were powerless to atop the sale. The Licensing Act bars th© sale of liquor to youths only for consumption on the promises. The Magistrate wanted to commit the boy to the Industrial School, hut a difficulty occurred because only tho Governor has power to order such a committal if the offender is over the ago of sixteen, and the case was adjourned.
