FOOTBALL.

THE LEAGUE GAME. NEW ZEALAND (18) DEFEATS QUEENSLAND (14).

Preas Association—'Telegraph.—Copyright. BRISBANE, July 8. The weather was fine and about 10,000 were present. In the first half the New Zealanders played with a breeze, and (bowed brilliant combination, while the Queenslanders tackled and fumbled badly. Play was very fast and strenuous, and several players were temporarily disabled. The New Zealanders had much the better of this half. They badly beat the Queenslanders in the scrum, and scored most of their points as the result. The second half was vigorously contested, both sides showing splendid combination. The tackling was deadly. The New Zealanders wore frequently on the defensive, and the Queenslanders lost several certain tries through fumbling when close to the visitors’ line. The closing stages were very exciting, and the Queenslanders scored twice. The remainder of the points wore the results of free kicks. Alterations in the Queensland team were—O’Brien. Heidke, and Murtagh replaced Trueman, Munro, and Jones. In the New Zealand team Asher, Gillett, McDonald, Mason, and Dunning replaced Winder, Siddells, Keen, Stannaway, and Milne. At half-time New Zealand was 13 and Queensland 2. The final score was—New Zealand 18 (Seager, McDonald, Mitchell, and Sprague scored tries, and Seager converted three), Queensland 14.

FOURTH CLASS Pirates 3 v. Eastern 0. Wanganui 23 v. Kaierau 3.

The matches played on Saturday on the Rec. attracted a fair number of spectators. As was expected, the Pirate-Old Boys match proved the better game of ho two, and there were some flashes of really good play, the Old Boys, who put a very strong team in the field, making a better flight against the champions than the difference on the scores would indicate—l 9 to 3. By the way, the score registered by, the Old Boys was the first recorded against the Pirates during this season’s Cup contests. It speaks’well for the defence put up by the blacks that their line has only been crossed once to date, and the blues are «to be eougratu-

lated on achieving that distinction, the more so as the try secured on Saturday was the outcome of a pretty bit of play, and was thoroughly deserved. The ivau-ganui-Kaierau match was not a very interesting game, Wanganui winning by 15 to 0, Southcombc, with fine kicks, converting the three tries secured by the red and blacks.

PIRATES (19) v. 'OLD BOYS (3),

Playing with the wind behind them, the Pirates quickly set up an attack, which ended in he Old Boys forcing. The blue forwards carried play to the other end of the field, Brownlie being conspicuous. A mull by Claude Dustin (full) nearly let the Old Bovs in. A free to the blues followed, Chamberlain making a good but futile attempt at goal. The black vanguard, headed by W. Dustin, Martis, and Lynch, swept up the field, and the Old Boys were kept busy defending. Had Atkins shot the ball out from the scrums quickly the blacks must have scored, but. be tried to go on his own too much. The blues' defence was very sound, and though the Pirates made big efforts they were kept out for a long time. Eventually, however, Atkins, with a centreing kick, sent the leather out to Phillips, who secured well, dashed over, and converted. The blues rallied a bit and' made tilings interesting, but it was not long before the blacks again assumed the aggressive, a line forward rush carrying play into the blues’ quarters. Here Percival cross-kick-ed, with the result that Tukere almost cot away with a clear run in for ( Id Boys. Pirates worked their way to the blues’ 25, where Atkins secured from a scrum land sent out to MchTtPish, to Coutts, who darted straight ahead through the opposition and ran right scoring a very fine try, which Phillips converted. Half time sounded at his stage. Changing ends, the blacks soon had t lie blues in difficulties, and a passing rum looked dangerous, but McFetrish’s pa-a went forward when near the line. A scrum ensued, and then Martis secured and crossed the line. The kick at goal failed. Again the blacks attacked, but then the blues, with a combined rush, aided by a mistake by 0. Dustin, took play to the other end of the field, the blacks having to force. At it again, Atkins got possession, cleverly beat two or three, and passed to W. Dustin, who sent on to Percival, who made a good but unsuccessful attempt to pot. The Pirates continued to have all the best of matters for some time, but at length Brownlie and Rabone headed a rush by the blues to the blacks’ 25. Here Rabone secured and was all but over. The Pirates now had an anxious time, the Old Boys attacking strongly, but the tackling of the blacks was deadly. At length, however, Rabone secured, passed to Collier, to Chamberlain, who put the finishing touches on a capital bit of play by crossing the line. Ho failed to convert. Encouraged by this success and the cheers of their supporters, the Old Boys returned to the attack, but the defence set up was too sound, and after a few minutes of hard battling they cleared their line. Headed by Dustin, Martis, and Schmidt, they swept up the field. W. Dustin secured and crossed, Martis failing at goal. Just on time Dustin (who was playing a great game) repeated the performance, Martis again failing to convert from a difficult angle. The game ended:— Pirates 19 Old Boys 3 Mr T. T. Bell refereed to the satisfaction of both sides.

WANGANUI (15) r. KAIERAU (0). This game was by no means exciting. Playing with the wind, Wanganui attacked, and Kaierau were kept penned down, having to force several times in quick order. A couple of shots by Southcombc from marks wont wide. Then the maroons rushed to the other end of the field, but the red and blacks wore soon back again, and Day secured a try as the outcome of fast following up. Southcombc converted. The Wanganui backs were throwing the ball about' a lot, but fumbling and Hanging on spoilt many 'opportunities. On one occasion Stewart crossed, but the line flag wont up. Some more scrambling play followed, and then Jago took a pass from W. Worsop and. ran over, Southcombc again adding the major points. The spell ended at this stage. Kaierau lost the services of Router early in the game, owing to an injury.

In the second spell Kaierau played np better, and the redand blacks hud a turn at defending. The maroon forwards were doing good work, hut their back division was very otherwise it would have gone hard with the red and blacks. 'Hie tatter at length worked out to half, and Sontbcombe put in a splendid run, and got to within a few yards of the lino, when Sellars grassed him in fine style. There was a lot of uninteresting play between the 25’s until just on time, when Stewart wound up a Wanganui passing rush by running right behind the posts. Southcombo again did the trick, and the game ended; Wanganui 15 Kaierau 0 Mr L. E. Bassett ably controlled the game.

JUNIOR CUP. The Pirates visited Waverley on Saturday, and a splendid game was witnessed, victory resting with the country team by 14 to 10, after an dxciting contest. College put up a cricket score against Wanganui, registering no fewer than 66 points to nil. The winners showed splendid combination, and Hives was in brilliant form, scoring 12 tries. Matariki defeated Kaierau by 8 to 6 scoring two tries, one of which was converted, to two tries. The winning try was scored right on time.

THIRD CLASS. The Pirates journey to Waverley, and won by 12 points to 3. Kaierau defeated College by 9 to 3. after a keenly contested game.

FOURTH CLASS, Pirates defeated Eastern by 3 points to nil after a close game. r Wanganui scored 23 points to 3 against Kaierau, proving much superior to their opponents.

It is understood that there is some probability of a match between the Pirate seniors and the College being played after the Cup games arc finished. Such a match should provide a most interesting struggle, and it is to be hoped it will eventuate.

WANGANUI D.H.S. (221 v TAIHAPE D.H.S. (9).

The above two schools met on the Rec on Saturday morning, the match being won by the local lads after a good struggle by 22 to 9. The game was much mora
