WANGANUI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL REPORT. Following is the annual report to be presented at the above Society’s meeting on Monday evening next: The committee, in presenting the annual report for the season 1910-11, wishes to congratulate the members on the satisfacstory state of the finances of the Society. All the liabilities have been met, additions have been made to the plant, and there is a credit balance of ,£-t to commence the season with. Some 30 now .members joined the society during the year, while very few of the old members resigned, so that the membership list is greater now than it has ever been. Shows. —Two shows were held during the year, one in November and the other in March. The spring show was well supported by both exhibitors and visitors. The number of entries constituted a record in the history of the society, and the quality of the exhibits was very high. Financially this show was also very successful, as it was well patronised by the public and the members. The Autumn Show, on the other hand, was not a great success. In the first place, the date chosen was not suitable, counter attractions absorbed the interest of the public, while the exceptionally dry summer prevented exhibitors from obtaining suitable specimens. The committee isof opinion that, if the Autumn Show is again held, it should take place not later than the month of February, The great feature of the Autumn Show was the splendid exhibit of fruit, the varieties of applies in particular being a district credit to the town and district. Thanks.—The thanks of the Society are due to the ladies and gentlemen who donated so many special prizes, for without this assistance it would be impossible to hold, any shows whatever. A special word of praise is also due to the ladies who midertook the management of the tea rooraa so successfully. In conclusion, the committee wishes to urge upon the members the great necessity for each individual member to canvass for entries among his or her friends, for it is by this moans that greater interest will be fostered in the work of the Society, and greater enthusiasm in horticulture created among the inhabitants of the town and country.
