AN EXTRAORDINARY CASE.
A WOMAN REFUSED ADMISSION TO N.Z. Some Sad Features. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. An extraordinary case of refusal by the Customs authorities to re-admit a former resident of Christchurch to the Dominion is attracting attention here. A young m.rried woman who was illand destitute in Sydney was sent by tile Sydney police to her relatives in Christchurch, 'the relatives were quite willing to give the woman a home, but refused to enter into a bond that she would not become a charge on the State, and on that ground the Customs authorities declined to admit her. Investigations show that the case has very sad features. The woman married a man in business here, and they went to Sydney to live. The husband turned out worthless, and virtually robbed her of what property she had. She fell ill, wont into a private hospital, and her husband thereupon deserted her, taking with him the only child. The Sydney police failed to rring back her husband, and ' was decided that the best course would be to send the woman to New Zealand, and inquiries showed that a good home would be found for her here. On that understanding she, was brought over, arriviu gon Juno 21. The outcome of the Customs Department’s action is that the woman has been soul back to Sydney, where she is destitute and he. . no friends.
