RUGBY FOOTBALL. NORTH ISLAND v. SOUTH ISLAND. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 4. Montgomery and Dougall (Bay of Plenty), Miller, .Thompson and Winter (Poverty Bay), S. Darby. N N. Morgan and J. Truecott (South Auckland), 11.. Mealed and G. Smith (Bush Districts),. N. Mackenzie, H. J„,McKenzie and P. Barry (Wajrivrapa). O’Connor, Stalker and Carroll .;(Moiiawatn), Nephia Winiata and W'a WifiSTata (Horowhcnna). RUGBY FOOTBALL. TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. BY “DODGER,” The Wanganui team chosen to go to Hawera to-morrow to play Taranaki is a very strong one, and should give a good account of itself. It is to bo regretted that Southcombe and Signal are unable to make the trip, but Lyons and Phillips should make good substitutes. , Presum ably McFetrish will take Signall’s place on the wing, and Phillips go up to fiveeighths. The back division, oven with these alterations, will be a strong one. and specially so on the defensive. The forwards are a solid lot, and should hold their own with the opposing vanguard in scrum work, and also in the loose. The inclusion of Edgar McDonald as wing forward will strengthen the team considorablv as he is a greatly improved player, and should do good service. It is to bo hoped that Stewart will .get some jphauccs on the wing, as that is a position i)i which he should prove a big success, with bis pace and weight. Providing no further alterations than those mentioned above have to be made in the team, our bovs should have a big chance of turning the tables on the amber and blacks. In any case, if the' conditions arc favourable, the game promises to be a very fine one, and there is a reasonable nrospect of Wanganui gaiuiu" a victory. It is questionable whether Lynch (Pirates) should not have been selected as an emergency before J. Laird, ’the Pirate man has shown consistently good form all through the season, and is quite one of the best forwards in his team. Apart from this, the selectors appear to have made the wisest choice possible from the material available.
NORTHERN UNION GAME. The League game of football in New Zealand is not going to affect the Union game, according to Mr J. L. Short, manager of the New Zealand Universities football team, which arrived in Sydney last week. “No,” said Mr Short, “I do not think the Northern Union game will affect football over there one way or the other. The League has got a slight hold in Auckland, lint, as you know, New Zealand is a long-drawn-out country, arid I think the interest is purely local. There is not a single club in Wellington, and there is not likely to be, either.’ It will never, got a hold there, because they could not get a ground to play on. The Rugby Union has been very--far-sooing in this respect, for they have collared all the grounds. Acs. Auckland is practically the only place where it is played, and I think most of the men in the team-now in Sydney are from Auckland. I, at any rate do not anticipate that it will influence the Union game to any appreciable extent one way or the other.”
