The banks have, been cashing large numbers of notes, owing to an impression gainiug ground that they would not be worth their face value after the end of June, when a heavy tax on new issues operates. It is believed the rumour was started by unscrupulous persona in the country districts, who are buying notes from ignorant farmers at 15s to 18s each.
