Mrs Hesse out up a very line fight, but Miss Hartgill’s hard driving proved too effective. COMBINED HANDICAP DOUBLES. Anderson and Mrs Andersqn beat V. Wybourne, and Miss Barker, 50-46. The result in this case was due to the consistent accuracy of the winners, and also, >o a certain extent, to Wybourne’s anxiety to cover the whole court. MEN’S CHAMPION SINGLES. J. C. Nicholson beat A. J. McCaul, 6-1, Nicholson’s steady, all-round, accurate play proved too much for McCaul, who *pi>cared uncertain ,and lacking in dash. LADIES’ CHAMPION 1 DOUBLES. FINAL. Misses Hartgill and Williams beat Misses Brewster and Thomson, 6-1, 6-3. Vhe winners were on the top of their isnie,' an¥l won all the way. Miss Brewster appeared, from her play, to have •considered the result a foregone eoncln--iou. Miss Williams got in some fine volleying and strong back-hand play,, and Miss Hartgill drove very finely, and played a hard, vigorous gam? throughout. COMBINED CHAMPION DOUBLES. A. J. McCaul and Mrs Gordon beat Nicholson and Miss Brewster, G-3, 7-5. This was a very hard-fought match >i<»ht through. The local players took the first set at 6-3, but the visitors led in the second set, 4-2. By steady play the winners evened the score, and eventually won a hard contest, 7-5. Mrs Gordon’s play , was probably the best of the four, being hard and fairly accurate, and the win was largelv due to her. SlcCaul’s overhead work was very sound, but Nicholson was not quite as steady as usual. Miss Brewster’s play from the nack line was quite up to standard, and was frequently applauded.
