N.Z. SHIPPING AND SEAMEN'S ACT

ROYAL ASSENT GIVEN. (Per United Press Association.! WELLINGTON, April 3. The, Royal Assent has been given to the Shipping and Seamen Act Amendment Act,' 1809, which is to come into force on Ist May next. The Act mentioned above .provides that seamen employed on ships trading between New Zealand and Australia should be paid not less than the rate of wages received by seamen in New Zealand; and that in the case of ships trading between Australia and New Zealand carrying Asiatic crews, there shall be payable an additional stamp duty of 23 per cent, of the passage money or freight money received in respect of such ships. The Act was specially directed against the coming of steamers employing Lascar labour to New Zealand ports, and was a result of the extension of the P. and 0. Company’s service to Auckland.
