IMPERIAL CONFERENCE.

Press Association Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, March 20. The Times, in a leading article, advocates that Mr Asquith should preside over the Imperial Conference. This is due to the men who have travelled thousands of miles and devoted months of work to the Conference. The status of the Conference, as the highest deliberative body in the Empire, would otherwise deteriorate, arid Prime Ministers of the Dominions would in future be less disposed to spend time and trouble in attending the gathering. THE TIMES AND NEW ZEALAND. Received March 21, 9.20 a.m. LONDON, March 20. The Times says that New Zealand has often led the way in Imperial politics, and trusts that Sir Joseph Ward will persevere in his effort to advance the fundamental object of the Imperial Conference, viz., the closer union of the scattered nations of the Empire. . ; . TRIBUTE TO MR. DEAKIN. . , Received March 21, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, March 20. The Times says that the Australian delegates to the Imperial Conference will have to bestir themselves if they are to maintain the reputation for eloquence, and fervid Imperialism which made Mr Deakin such a dominant figure in 1907. DECLINE TO BE DRAWN. LONDON, March 20. Replying to questions, the Eight Hons. H. H. Asquith and Lewis Harcourt decline to tie drawn into discussing Sir Joseph Ward's Imperial scheme.
