SWIMMING.
- BRIDGE-TO-BRIDGE RACE. The event of the swimming season took place on Saturday afternoon, in the form of the bridge-to-bridge race. Eighteen competitors started, and all finished. The current and an unusually heavy tide were running strongly with the swimmers, and made tneir long swim considerably less trying than it might otherwise have been. The finish at the Town Bridge was watched by a, big crowd from the river banks and bridge. The following were the placed men; —. H. D l . Borthwick (Wanganui Amateurs), 14Gsccs., 1; D. Stewart (Collegiate Schoo’J, 20secs., 2; N. F. Bignell (W.A.), 20sccs.. 3; iC. S. Swan' 4, Bakewell 5, Foden 6, i.irnbnH 7, Jago 8, with Bridges handy. The order of the swimmers in relation to -the time which they occupied over the course is as follows;—Borthwick 31 mins. 20secs., Sthwart 31.20, Bignell 31.50, Foden 32, Swan 32.40, Bridges 32.55, Bakcw'cll 33.50, Deem 34, Armstrong 34.5, Mitchell 34.40, Turnbull 35.15, Jago 35.15, 1 Kerby 35.50, Josephs 36, Chamberlain 36.15, J. Darby 37.30, W. Darby 37.50, Paul 38.18. Borthwick and, Stewart are equal for Mr M. L. Lampe’s trophy for the fastest time. Borthwick takes the challenge cup presented by Lever Bros., and trophy presented by the President, Mr D. McFarlane. Stewart wins Mr A. G. Bigncll’s trophy, and Bignell wins Mr Hatrick’s trophy. The following were the officials:—Mr D. McFarlane, starter; Mr H. Cooper, timekeeper; t Messrs Penhall, Duigan, and Richardson, judges. Tho Club desires to. thank the A.B.Ci for the use of their shed, the U.B.C. and W.R.C. for the use of boats, and the donors of the handsome trophies.
