NOTES ON THE MEETING. Ny “VICTOR." , .lodging by the many remarkably fine performances put up on Saturday, this year's Championship Meeting; must lake rank as one of the finest ever held.. Exceptionally fine, form was shown hv Ronald Opic, 0. Kcddell. and G. N. Hill. The former's success in the sprints was generally expected, as lie had been showing suck brilliancy ail the season. There were some who thought Stohr, of New Plymouth, would beat Opic in the 220 yards, but the Canterbury man was, much too good, winning by 10 yards, and cutting out the furlong in 22sec, or two-fifths of a. second faster than the previous New Zealand record, which stood to the credit of \V. A. Woodger. Opie had no difficulty in carrying off the honors in the 100 yards, his time being 10 l-ssec; while in the 440 yards he got home in 50 4-sscc, another splendid performance. His treble win and the times recorded stamps him as a truly great runner, and it is sincerely to be lioped that the popular young sprinter will be sent Homo to compete at the Festival of the Empire sports. His recent form suggests that he is more likely to meet with success than Woodger, who is now bn his way Home. It is. open to question whether the latter will be able to reproduce his very best form at Home, and therefore Opie should be sent. It is very questionable whether Guy Haskins is as good a milcr as G, N. Hill, the Aucklander, who won at Christchurch in 4.2.1 3-5, while over any longer distance the Auckland.lad would probably make a . hack of Haskins. At last year’s Championship Meeting Hill ran a mile in mud in 4.35. In the light of his performances on Saturday lie would have a better chance of fetching back with him a world's championship than any man now with tho team. Another man who would probably score a win or two would be Gi Kcddell, of Southland, who covered tho 120 Yards Hurdles in 15' 7-lOsec* and the 440 Yards Hurdles in 60 3-Ssec, while his long jump effort of 21ft 3Jin would take a lot of beating. Davis, the Victorian hurdler, who has been chosen as one of tho Australasian team, would probably find Kcddell too good for him oyer tho 120 yards hurdles, though the Victorian* at his best might beat the New Zea- • lander over the 440 yards stick event.
