THE MOKAU.
A BRIGHT PROSPECT FOR THE FUTURE. ■ (By Telegranh.— Snc’inl to Herald.) NEW PLYMOUTH. January 19. The Mokau district,' well-known in connection with litigation, is attracting great attention lately. Twelve thousand acres near Totoro have been taken up by a'" southern syndicate, which includes an cxCabinet Minister. This week Mr Beauchamp (chairman of the Bank of New Zealand), Mr Watson (director), and Mr Blundell (manager of the bank at New Plymouth) motored through to Te Kuiti, and went up the river to the coal mines. All expressed astonishment at the beautiful scenery on the Mokau Diver. The Trust Board held its annual meeting at Mokau yesterday, Messrs Nichols (chairman), Jennings, M.P., and' Walter Jones being present. Twenty-seven miles of the river have hen snagged by the Board, and is navigable for steamers carrying 30 tons of' cargo. The opening of the country in the South Auckland and North Taranaki Land Districts during the past six years is mAv showing great results. At present over 2000 bales of wool are stored by the Waitara Harbour Board for transhipment from Waitara port by an ocean liner, which .will also take away frozen moat from Borthwick’s Waitara Freezing Works.
