HOCKEY. MISS COLLIER THE BEST BACK OF THE TOURNAMENT. (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, September 9. The weather was lovely. Wairarapa beat Nelson by 1 to nil. Hawke’s Bay beat Wanganui by 4 goals to nil. Wanganui played a, great game, and fought hard against great odds. Hawke’s Bay was good in the circle, and Wanganui's passing was effective, but lacked finish. Miss V. Collier, Wanganui, wins the trophy given by a Wellington lady for tho best back at the tournament, general excellence, and all-round work. So far Wanganui have only lost two games, one each against Auckland and Hawke’s Bay. They play the last match against Greymouth on Saturday afternoon. Miss Perrett is fifth on the list for the forwards’ prize. The team leave on Saturday night for Wellington, arriving home by Monday's mail train.

GOLF. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. September 9. The golf championship meeting was continued in brilliant weather this, morning, when the semi-finals of the professionals' match was decided, and the third round of the amateur championship played. In the professionals’ match, Clements (Christchurch) beat Simpson (St. Clair), 2 up; J. M. Herd (Napier) beat Johnston (Wanganui), 3 up and 2 to play. Clements and Herd play off to-morrow. dn the amateur championship, Duncan held his, position without difficulty. 11. 0. Smith (Dunedin)'beat Baln'eavis (Napier), 5 up and 4; Lusk (Christchurch) beat Kidston (Miramar), 2 up; Wood (Christchurch) beat B. J. Smith (Dunedin), 4 up and 3; Duncan (Wellington) beat Seymour (Timaru), 4 up and The medal match, in which there are 93 competitors, is being played to-day. The semi-finals in the amateur championship will be taken to-morrow morning, and the final over 36 holes in the afternon.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH, September 9. The golf tournament was continued to-day, the results being:— New Zealand Amateur Championship, third round.—H. C. Smith (Dunedin) beat H. E. H. Balneavis (Wellington) by 5 up and 4 to play; H. B. Lusk (Christchurch) beat E. S. Kidston (Miramar) by 2 up and 1 to play; B. B. Wood (Christchurch)'beat B. J. Smith (Dunedin) by 4 up and 3 to play. In the semi-final. Wood beat Duncan by 3 up and 1 to play, Lusk beat B. J. Smith by 3 up and 2 to play. Professionals' Match, semi-final.—J. A. Clements (Christchurch) beat W. Simpson (St. Clair) by 8 up and 7 to play; J. M. Herd (Napier) beat J. C. Johnston (Wanganui) by 3 up and 2 to play. The tournament will be concluded tomorrow, when the finals in the foregoing will be played.

MANAWATU LADIES’ TOURNEY. PALMERSTON N„ September 9. The Manawatu Club ladies’ golf meeting concluded at Hokowhitu to-day in ■ the delightful weather that has characterised it throughout. A great atraction was the final for the Manawatu championship, which many expected would see the reversal of the New Zealand championship final. Miss Wray held the record for the course, 84 on 84 par, and had put up the best round at the meeting, 88, in the qualifying competition for the championship against Miss Collins’ 98. There was a large crowd following. Miss Collins began and continued very coolly, but her opponent was nervous, and her short game, usually remarkably good, failed her. At the seventh hole the New Zealand champion was 4 up, and turned with the same balance. The tenth was the first hole to go to Miss Wray. At the 11th Miss Wray was 9in from the hole, with a stroke to the good, when Miss Collins laid her stymie. Miss Wray lobbed over, but struck on the rim, and stayed out. Holes 11, 12, and 13 were halved, though Miss Wray had two strokes to the good on the latter green. Similar features on the next two greens by Miss Wray left .Miss Collins.4 up
