LONDON WOOL SALES. DALGETY AND CO.’S EEPOET. Reporting on the London wool sales, under date of July 28th last, Dalgety and Co., Ltd., say;— • The fourth series of colonial wool sales for the current year, which opened on 12th inst., was brought to a close last Tuesday. The quantities available and catalogued are as follows:--Fresh Nett Ar'vTs AvT’blo Catal’d Bales. Bales. Bales, Victorian 30,469. 16,000 18,769 New South Wales ... 64,014 16,000 21,057 Queensland 18,830 11.900 10.454 South Australian ... 5,743 3,500 4.130 West Australian ... 3,341 -3,300 3,458 Tasmanian 3,286 4,200 3,386 Now Zealand 87,304 89,400 68,730 Australasian 212,937 144,300 129,984 South African 72,697 10,700 7,878 Total 235,634 155,000 137.862 The number of bales not offered was 24,160, while 32,000 bales were held over or withdrawn. The Quantity sold is returned as 127,000 bales, viz.85,000 for Home consumption. 41,700 for the Continent, and 300 bales for America. The sales throughout have been well attended, and competition has been active, although not so general as usual, owing to the bulk of the buying having come from the Homo trade. Prices have ruled about the same throughout the series, except that coarse greasy crossbreds, which showed some decline at first, gradually hardened, and during- the last few days wore occasionally rather dearer than May closing rates. The weakness in short faulty scoured merinos also developed as the series progressed, and at limes they were very difficult of sale at 5 to 10 per cent, decline. As compared with May closing rates, we quote present prices; —Merino greasy, par; scoured, medium to good, par; short and faulty, 6 to 10 per cent, lower. Fine crossbred, greasy, pur; scoured, medium to good, par; scoured, short and faulty, 6 to 10 per cent, lower. Medium and coarse crossbred, greasy,' par; scoured, 5 per cent, lower. Blipe, tine, par; coarse, 5 to 71 per cent, lower. Lambs, merino and fine crossbred, par to 5 per cent, lower; medium and coarse crossbred, 5 per cent, lower. One feature of the series has been the sale of some 4000 to 500 bales of line Geelong and and other Australian wools on American acsount. These wools have either been sent back from Boston, or stopped hero in transit, and in most cases the prices accepted in public sale show a heavy loss on the cost in Australia, not to mention freight and charges, and it was. the knowledge that this wool was on the market that caused Yorkshire buyers to take so gloomy a view of the position last month. The result of thVs scries may be considered satisfactory, for the tone has been good throughout, and though the carry forward is heavy, the quantity of new arrivals for September is not likely to be large, and with an interval of two months it is probable there will bo plenty of buyers for ail that is then available. It is, however, likely that some attempt may be made on the Continent to depress prices for merinos before the opening of the colonials sales, as another increase in the Australasian clip seems almost certain. Punta Arenas and Falkland Islands Wools. —The quantities available were as follow,: Falkland Islands, 1500 hales: Punta Arenas. 10,000; North Patagonia, 600; River Plate 1500; Total, 12.500 bales. These were practically all sold with excellent competition, the finer sorts being at par to 5 per cent, dearer than in May, while the inferior and earthy descriptions made May rates to 5 per cent, decline. * The next, auctions commence on 27th September, when it is estimated that, including the quantity carried forward, the available total will be about 115,000 bales.
