Lord Kitchener, when interviewed, said he was very pleased at what ho saw in Australia, and in Now Zealand. Asked if he thought the period of training under the Defence. Act ..was sufficient, he replied, “I do not think you must -cross-examine mo on that point. I can only say as is in the memorandum that Australia has splendid material whereof to make an army.” When asked whether -exception was taken regarding the cost, he replied, “No; it surely was not a large sum! A prosperous country, like. Australia will find she can hear that very well.”
