GONVILLE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Following is the report of the Committee to he presented at the annual meeting of householders to be held this evening at 8 o’clock in the school: Ladies and Gentlemen, — Your committee in presenting its' report and balance-sheet for the pediod ending 31st March, 1910, begs to state that at the conclusion' of the last meeting of householders your committee met and; elected Mr F. Webb-Jones, chairman, and Mr. F. Bourne, secretary and treasurer, but about half through' the year Mr Bourne, owing to press of business, had to resign the secretaryship and Mr. Chatwin was appointed in his stead. During the vear a considerable am bunt of work in connection with the school grounds has been undertaken, ' viz., levelling, claying, and fencing, the amount expended being £59 10s 2d, in addition to which work was done by working bees on several Saturday afternoons. Special grants for these obeots were obtained from the Board to the amount of ; £2B 11s. During the gale at ’Xmas, part of the fence was blown down and'that had to be repaired. The various items of receipts and payments are shown in the statement of accounts and your committee would point.' out that while the amount of capitation from the Board only amounted to .£24 14s, the cost of cleaning the school was .£l3 16s, thus leaving .only £lO 18s for other expenses, including firing for the two buildings, so that any improvements to the school or grounds have to be done out of moneys raised by special efforts, f'such as concerts.

Your committee urged upon the Board the necessity of enlarging Hue schoolhouse, and after sonic delay succeeded in having this desirable work nut in hand to the extent of an additional room at. a cost of £325; the work being well on towards completion. Your committee also had the steps to the lower ground cemented—q most necessary work—at a cost of £3 15s. The liabilities the incoming ■ committee will have to meet amount to £9 ss, including cost of steps. Three concerts were hold, the proceeds of which amounting to £26 11s 6d, w r ere ■devoted to prizes, levelling site, etc. . The number of scholars on the roll is 169, the average attendance being 87 per cent. Owing to the insufficient accommodation at the school the Public Hall has been continued as a side school. Several changes in the staff have taken place among rue assistants.

In. retiring from office your committee regrets the lack of interest of householders in*the school, but trusts.there wall ho a large attendance at the annual meeting and keen competition for seats on the committee as some of the present members aro unable to again offer their services. Your committee have to thank Mr Kimo and his staff for their willing- assistance on many occasions, and for their keen attention to their duties. For the committee, F. WEBB-JONES, Chairman. E, J. CHATWIN, Hon, Sec. and Treas.
