THE BARRY-ARNST RACE.' Press Association .—i'elograph .—Copyright. Received April 1, 1.20 p.m. LONDQN, March 31. Subscriptions to Barry’s fund how total £7BB. Mr Guy Niokalls estimates that the total requirements will be £llOO. A special appeal is to be started to raise tne balance of the money. - : THE ARNST-WHELCH MATCH. LATEST FROM AKAROA., (By Telegraph.—Special to Heeald.) AKAROA, April 1. ■ Amst and Whelch are taking matters very qiiietly to-dayrin : anticipation of-, .the • big face totoiorrow;:' Both express themselves hopefully, and both are ■in good form. The champion is looking brighter in complexion than for some days past, and , has apparently' quite recovered from his, little Indisposition of Tuesday night’. Both men-: will be but in the morning for a final spin. Both are using boats built by,.George Towns, Whelch having had a new boat: built for him, 25ft 6in. long, lljin beam, and 231b weight. . Arhst’s. rigger is 26ft long, 12in beam, and 281b in weight. The course will, in all probability, be that over which Whelch and Fogwell gowed 12 months- ago, starting down the harbour at Porter’ Point, and finishing off Daly’s Wharf, a distance approximately of 3| miles. Both men have done trials over the course within the week, and the friends of both profess to ho entirely satisfied, but it is easy to ree that the hopes of Whelch’s, supporters rest to some extent on the AVafoa man’s knowledge of the harbour and his skill us a waterman. This will tell in his favour if the water is at all lumpy. The race is timed to start at 2 p.m., but the referee may postpone the start for a time if the water is not suitable.

There is hot a great deal of betting here, Arnst being a firm favourite at 3 to 1 on.

The weather to-clay is gloriously fine, and the prospects are bright for another fine day to-morrow. The tide will be running, out when the race is rowed,

Akaroa 'is filling rapidly with visitors, and a big crowd s coming over by to-day's coaches.
