WAIROA, March 31. A report is to hand that the Nuhaka bridge, built by tlie Government three or four years ago at a cost of £3OOO or ,£4OOO, has been washed away, isolating the Nuhaka settlers. The Turiroa wharf has just floated past on its way to sea. The Scamperdowu bridge approach has been washed away, and tlie bridge is sagging in the centre. It is not likely to stand the night. It is expected that the river will rise again by midnight.
FLOODS IN WAIROA. WAIROA, April 1. Though it is still raining slightly the rivers have fallen considerably, especially the Wairoa, where the mouth last night was fully 1000 yards wide. The new Frasertown bridge stood the severe strain splendidly. The river rising 50ft at Camperdown, the bridge was badly damaged, and will need re-piling. Stock losses are heavy in young sheep. FLOODS AT PAEROA. - District Submerged. Great Loss of Sheep and Cattle. Mining Companies Heavy Losers. AUCKLAND, April 1. Tlie latest news from Paeroa show that the floods are far reaching. On Wednesday night the wind blew with hurricane force from the east. The river rose to such an extent that a large part of the residential portion of the district was submerged, and the people were flooded out. One fourroomed house was washed away. Outhouses, trees, and almost anything moveable were washing about. Dead sheepi and cattle marked the course of the river, and the farmers will he heavy losers.
The tunnel on the Paeroa-Waihi railway was blocked with logs and rocks, and communication beyond Paei'oa completely blocked. Slips occurred all along tne railway line, and considerable damage was done to the permanent way. At the height of the flood on Wednesday night the fires at the gasworks were extinguished and the township was- plunged in darkness.
The Waihi Goldmining Company are heavy losers, the damage to plant and other property running into four figures. The Talisman Company's property also suffered severely. The iron water race 1 and battery were very badly damaged. The Waikino ' was badly flooded, and there were seven feet of water in the shops on the main road.
