Swindlers in many parts of the Russian Empire are at present reaping a harvest of wealth by playing upon the ignorance and superstition of the Russian peasants. These unscrupulous persons are frightening the people by declaring that Halley’s comet is making straight for the earth, and unless sufficient subscriptions are x*cceived to enable political ’-rayers to be -un for the world’s delivery from coilisron with the comet, the latter will not deflect one inch, and will cause the end of the world. The peasants, in their ignorance, are subscribing largely.
