A Raid on Carlton.

MELBOURNE, March 13. 'Tushes” arc becoming very troublesome again in Melbourne, and during the past few days several serious conflicts have taken place between', rival gangs. On Triday night a row occurred near Victoria Market. Later on a band of roughs came across from North Melbourne, and about one hundred,.armed with pickets and pockethandkerphiefs; with stones in them, marched-down Quecnsbury Street, Carlton, shouting, ‘/Death to the Emus!” The pickets had been,torn off. fences. • Tlie crowd knocked : ovpr u woman and a child and also a man. Several of the gang were arrested, and were fined, the amounts ranging from .£3 to ,£lO. The gang, after being; .driven Out of Carlton, raged about the city like savages. - They stampeded i A a mob do\yn ' Elizabeth street, and turned, into Latrobe Street. They surged across into’ Bourke Street, and practically took possession of a 'hotel, and on leaving that got back to‘Latrobe Street, where they raised, their - war-cry, “North Melbourne!, North Melbourne !” They pushed and jostled everybody in their way, , and behaved disgracefully, roaring and .shouting, and making night hideous. ; ■;

A constable in Latrobe Street endeavoured to persuade, them to cease their uproar, but, they ranged around him and began to attack him. The constable used bis strength to some purpose, and pushed several away, but not before' he' had received some hard blows. A civilian braved the wrath of the mob by venturing to help the constable; but this seemed to add fuel to the fire, and the citizen was severely mauled. The ; gang moved off about.a dozen.paces, and then began to hurl bottles - and brickbats -at' the constable. One of the missiles' struck’ him on the ’shoulder. ' Ho ,r charged--- forward with: his baton and, cracked one of his assailants over the head with it. This display of determination . struck terror into the hearts of the cowardly gang and they beat a retreat, leaving the ’field strewn with broken bottles/ ■ ■ 1 - r
