AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC

LYCEUM THEATRE. Hayward’s pictures

An excellent programme was submitted to a crowded house at the Lyceum Theatre last night, and judging by the frequent and. prolonged! applause, Mr Hayward’s patrons were thoroughly satisfied with the fare provided. Mr Hayward has now a large number of regular patrons, ■who make it a point to see the pictures at least one night a week. The pictures shown last night comprised , a happy blending of dramatic,, scenic, educational and comic. The first picture, “Small Game at the Zoo,” was highly instructive, and included some excellent studies of smaller animals, such as lemurs, foxes, and goats. The dramatic side of the programme was well filled by “The Legend of the Argentine Lace,” a' very pretty piece of dumb acting, and “The Sword of the King,” one of the finest spectacular pictures shown here, and one that certainly deserves its place as the star picture on the programme. Other serious subjects were “The , Veteran’s Story,” “A Woman’s Way,” and “Scenes in the Seaport of Copenhagen,” this last affording some very interesting’ glimpses of the shipping methods of the Danes. One phase of this film in particular, showing the harbour by moonlight, is certainly a revelation as a piece of photography. The comic pictures were, as usual, very good and well selected, the funniest being “The Story of the Caliph,” and “A False Lunatic.” Two interesting and amusing trick ■ films were shown—"Animated Cotton” and “Princess Nicotine”—the latter bemg shown in colours. Appropriate music was supplied by Madame SlcNicol, whose playing is a popular feature of the entertainment." The , same programme will be repeated to-night.
