WANGANUI ORCHESTRAL CON-
The concert last nig lit was perhaps one of the most successful that the Society nas placed before the public for some time. Though there was nothing very heavy, there was a very variety M items, which won the hearty applauss of the large aundience. Much praise is due to Mr Louis Cohen for the efficiency of the Orchestral items, and it was gratifying to see that the public murh appreciated the result of his efforts. The content opened with two selections, "Mirella," and "Adagio" (Guonod). The former was played tastefully and made a pleasant contrast to the more graceful movement of the latter. "Aubade Printaniere" (Lacombe), a light dainty piece, was very ueautifully renderoc; and was encored. An old favourite, but one that can be always enjoyed, was, the "March from Tannhauser" (Wagner), which ended the first half of the programme. The assistance of the "Brasses" and Mr A. Wade with the tenor horn, greatly added to the efficient rendering of tnis piece. In the second half of the programme, the Orchestra repeated "Loin dv Bal", by special request. The piece is for stringed instruments only, and was very pleasingly rendered. Waldenfel's "Ange d' Amour" (Angel of Love) was well received, and "Pomp and Circumstance" concluded the concert. Miss Ina Gow pleased the audience very much in her exquisite rendering' of "Concert Study in D flat" (Liszt), and on eing recalled played another item. Madame Briggs was heard to great advantage in Zanz'fi "Sing Sweet Bird" It lends itself to a sweet clear soprano voice, and this Madame Briggs has, and with the orchestral accompaniment, made a very pleasing item. On eing encored, Madame Briggs favoured the audience with another item. Later on in the evening, Madame gave a very pleasing rendering of "Rognana Nel Silenzio" (Donizetti) which was well received by the audience. A very pleasing inovation was a quintet "The Trout" (Schubert), by Mr Gordon Mcßeth (pianotorte), Mr. W. McCaul (violin), Mr Maurice Cohen (viola), Mr 11. Collier ('cello), and Mr Holden (bass). Both the third :u)d fourth movements were played, but the former seemed to be more appreciated. The item was beautifully rendered, and the various movements and variations, w.^re warmly applauded at the finish.
