He states that the parties concerned were both clerks and old friends-^-not a bookmaker and a backer — and the disturbance was not connected with a wager. John Alexander Angus, alias Johnston, alias Stewart, appeared for sentence before his Honor Mr Justice Edwards at the Supreme Court this morning. Accused - had pleaded guilty to three charges of theft at New Plymouth. The records', showed that accused had been convicted on fifteen previous occasions. His Honor sentenced pria/ner to eighteen months' imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be consecutive. Accused was also declared an habitual criminal. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night, Mr. Campbell said that Ministers of the Crown always hurled figures at | deputation*, well knowing that the said ; deputations had no chance of controverting them, "la fact," said Mr Campbell, "iv 1 an argument, it seems a safe course to quote figures, for then the other fellow thinks you know ail about it, and keeps quiet/ At the Supreme Court this morning, Samuel Meatyard, convicted of falsifying the books of the U.F.C.A., came up for sentence. Mr Hogg, for prisoner, said he quite realised that probation was out of the question, but, bearing in mind' accused's previous good character, he asked his Honor to deal leniently with mm. Accused was 27 years of age. His Honor said that as this was accused's first offence he would deal leniently with him - in the hope that it would lead to accused's reformation. A sentence of one year's imprisonment was imposed. A man named James Patrick Mooney, v ' alias Tierney called at Dr. Hugh Keith's house in Auckland, on. Saturday! and ask- ' ed for money to imy drink. The doctor, feeing the man wanted food instead of drink, took him ,into his house and acted the part of the Good Samaritan, givinghim food The doctor went o|it of thf... feitchen, where th© man was, but coming bade found a pair of his boots on th! man s feet.
