SCULLING.
j THE NEW YEAR HANDICAP. i BY "T'ICTOK." 1 A cable was to-day despatched to Mx R. Coombes, editor of the Sydney Referee, intimating that the money necessary for the big sculling handicap on the Wangraaui Riv«r at New Year time had been guaranteed, and that tho race would take place Mr Coombes had made all arrangements with about seven or eight of the best scullers in Australia to come over to compete, and though there has been some delay in getting the race put on -a definite footing there is every reason to believe that Pearce, Thoroughgood, Mitchell, Fogwell, Day, Kemp, Hagney,'and probably George Towns will come- over. With all these cracks competing, together with Arnst, • Whelch, Webb, and perhaps one or two other New Zealanders, the race should be one of the b©s± .ever seen in the colonies, and prove a bfig success from every point of view. About J>3oo has been guaranteed 'for prize money; , and expenses.
