SEAMEN'S PAY.

TROUBLE ON A UNION STEAMER Shabby Treatment of the Men. Press Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright. SYDNEY, September 23. Trouble has occurred aboard tho Union Company's Waitemata, which is loading at Newcastle under charter for Manila. Up to the present the crew has been paid in accordance with the recent New Zealand Arbitration Court award. To-day they were told that this would not hold good on the trip to Manila and 24 hours' notice was given that the pay of the seamen and firemen would be reduced. The men thereupon refused to work, alleging- that they understood they had been engaged for six months at New 'Zealand rates. They refused to leave the ship. The aid of the police was then invoked, and the men were ordered off, and left the ship.
