It is stated that fully 80 per cent, of the lambs in the Wairarapa this season are of the black-faced breeds. Samuel Meatyard again appeared before His Honor Mr Justice Edwards this morning, but as no instructions had yet been received from the Crown Law Department regarding the course to' be followed concerning the charges on which thejury disagreed, his Honor deferred passing sentence till 9.0 a.m. to-morrow. An argument took place yesterday on the racecourse between a bookmaker and a backer, the latter clinching matters by giving the layer of odds one straight from the shoulder. The blow landed fair on one of the "bookie's" eyes, and sent him reeling to the ground, where he laid some time in a dazed condition. Blood flowed freely from the gash caused by the blow, which was a very severe one. The recent flood in the river has had a detrimental effect en the bar channel, the leavy matter whicE the water carried in suspension, having caused a silting up of two feet. Soundings on the bar to-day garo a depth of 11 feet at 'high water springs, as compared with X 3 feet before the. flood occurred. It is expected, however — and in this opinion shipmasters concm? — that the return of the river to normal conditions will soon work the silt out, and that the previous depth will be obtained again 'before long. Mr. Wilson urged Mr Ton Haast not to put hia suggestion in the form of a motion. "Surely we can rely on our students to exercise their commonsensc, and their knowledge of what is decent. We are not dealing with school boys or V.M.C.A. students." Mr Von Haast did not prefis the point.
