The attendance during the afternoon was 3000. Robson put up a fine bowling performance, capturing 8 out of 9 wickets in the Australians' first innings. , Chidney, by smart wicket-keeping, accounted for three behind the stumps. Lewis took the first wicket for 32. The second fell for 35, and the third for 37. Trumper retired in his second over, beaten by one of Robson 's shooters. Macalister, in excellent form batted for an hour, leaving the record at four for 40. While Noble and Gregory were partners the light became so bad that play was stopped repeatedly, and beat both the batsmen. At 58 Chidney snapped up Gregory on the leg side of the wicket. Noble retired at 77, caught low down at slip. Three runs later Armstrong put up a skier in the slips, Crcsswell taking the catch. Seven for 80. Bardsley and Macalister's partnership lasted 55 minutes and added 45 the century appearing at the end of two hours' play. Play stopped at 6.15 owing to the bad light.
