The weather was fine, but wintry, for the tennis. Miss Powdrell had a comparatively easy .victory over the New South Wales lady champion. Miss Baker. Miss PowdreJl also beat Miss Thomas (Victoria) in the Ladies' Singles Handicap, 6—3, 9—7. In the Ladies Doubles Handicap Mrs Goldie and Miss Grey play the final tomorrow. Miss Powdrell, who won the New Zealand championship at New Plymouth this year by at last defeating Her great rival, Miss Nunneley (who had ample revenge in subsequent wins), won the right to the challenge round for the Australasian Championship by defeating Miss Stewart in the final of the AllComers' Singles during the week. In this competition the Taranaki girl put out Miss Addison, the Victorian champion, and Miss. Stewart, Victorian player, who had beaten Miss Baker, New South Wales champion, last November, and Miss Nunneley, a few days ago in the early rounds of the championship. VICTORIAN-NEW ZEALAND MATCH ABANDONED. SYDNEY, May 3. There is much disappointment that the Victorian-New Zealand ladies' tennis match on Davis Cup lines has fallen through, owing to the Victorian authorities not being prepared to play four aside.
