The Eruption of White Island
AUCKLAND, May 3. On Friday last, White Island was in an unusual state of activity, immense clouds of steam -issuing from the crater.
On Saturday morning, dense white clouds obscured the island, but from about noon the clouds vanished, and the island appeared to revert to its normal state, although three jets of black smoke were seen issuing from Ihe southern end, signifying that there had been recently an unusual disturbance.
[Though seldom visited, the island voicano of White Island, is one of the most interesting of the Dominion's therma l wonders. Tt is in the middle of the Bay of Plenty, about 30 miles out to sea from Opotiki, and can easily be seen from the decks of steamers travelling between Auckland and Gisborne. The island contains vast stores of mineral wealth, in the shape of sulphur deposits, and sulphuric acid. These were worked some -time ago, but we believe the venture has been abandoned. Great difficulty was experienced in the operations, the fumes from the crater being not only harmful, in fact dangerous to the men, but very destructive of all tools and gear.]
