SYDNEY, April 29. A very severe earth tremor was registered at the Observatory shortly before midnight of the 27th, proceded by two smaller tremors. The maximum amplitude was 15 degrees 8 ir.ilimetres. Large waves continued for nearly five minutes, while some of the series of succeeding waves reached six milimetres. The epicentum of the earthquake was 2000 or 3000 miles north from Sydney, probably in the seismic zone embracing the Philippines and surrounding islands. '
