OYSTERS

(P«r United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 23. The oyster season will open on Saturday week next (May Ist}. The Inspector of Sea Fisheries (Mr J. P, Bennett), who has just completed an inspection of beds in the Hauraki Gulf, reports that the oysters are plentiful. The fish have spawned ex. ceedingly well, except at the Barrier, where tho crop is rather disappointing. Mr Bennett is considering the advisableness of transplanting oysters from the more prolific beds to the Barrier, bein<* of opinion that by mixinsr the breeds the quality and quantity will be improved. Mr Bennett has suggested to the Department that the whole of the Gulf should be gazetted instead of isolated beds as heretofore, so aa not to hamper the work of the pickers, who, of course, are under the Inspector's personal supervision.
