FIRES

AUCKLAND, April 23. Inspector Cullen received h telegram from Constable Carmody, of Whangaroa, to-day, stating that a six-roomed house was destroyed by fire last night. The building belonged to Mr Cornelius Gothard, and had been rented to Mr Long, a dentist. The house, which was valued at ,£2OO, was insured in the South British office for .£IOO. It is not known whether Mr Long's effects were covered by insurance.
HASTINGS, April 24. At midnight a fire was discovered in Phillips and Wright's furniture factory, and in 30 minutes the place was in ruins. The fire spread to Hallinan's (blacksmith) cottage, and the inmates had to be rescued by the police. The insurances on the factory are not available, but they cover less than half the loss, which will be considerable. Hallinan's cottage was insured for ,£l5O in the Phoenix, and the furniture for ,£75 in the Standard.
