THE GAS WORKS

There was no doubt that the rise in the price of coal and the expenditure of .£1928 on mains and services was responsible for the small gas profits. It was not probable that extensions would continue at so rapid a rate, and as there was to be a special loan for Wanganui, Wanganui East, and Alma Road, it was fair to assume that the expenditure on mains would not be great in future, and therefore they could safely anticipate the profits would ribe. If Cr Muir, chairman of the Gas Committee, had followed the spirit of the new scheme of committee work, he might have claimed some honour, but from 17th December to 2nd March he had only called one meeting. The committee should meet more frequently, and should consider themselves more in the light of a board of directors. The Gas Department should send in a return showing coat of labour and of fittings, and the profits made thereon, also a return showing amount of coal' used, amount of gas produced, and amount paid for, so that it could be seen if there were a loss.
