PATEA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The annual nominations for tiie Mayoralty and Borough Council closed yesterday (Wednesday), and as the bare number required were nominated, it will not be necessary to hold an election. For the Mayoralty only Mr Adolph Christcnsen was nominated, being nominated by Mr M. Oarey and C. A. Walker. Following are the councillors: — B. T. Bennett, nominated by J. Holbert and W. Jackson; J. A. McKenna by A. Christensen and A. Howitt; W. C. Hancock by J. Watson and E. J. Smith; H. O. Clarke by P. A. Walker and P. Howard; H. P. Littlewood by A. T. Christensen and P. A. Walker; Frei, Ramebottom by J. J. Holtham and G. D. Hamerton; W. T. Simmonds by E. White and C. A. Larcombe; G. Smith by F. Ramsbottom and J. Hulbert; A. F. Spooner, by E. Smith and J. Watson. There are three new councillors this, year, namely, Messrs Bennett, Ramsbottom and Clarke, Messrs Howitt, Holtham, and White declining re-election. I notiw our esteemed townsman, Mr P. Walker, has started his new bu*>ine>« premises (chemist's shop), which will be an improvement to Egipont Street. Messrs McCarthy and Hunger are also enlarging their premises. I am sorry to state that dwelling houses (cottage^ are very scarce here, und I feel 6ure if some enterprising person -were ~t<> fewxlcl -fc-wo oxthree decent cottages there would be no difficulty in obtaining tenants.

Another matter I would like to mention is that> Mr Raynor (from Waverley) 's starting a butchery here with every pros pcH; of doing well. There is still, in my opinion, another opening here, that of a saddler and harness maker, and I hope to see one come along ere long.

Tt's most consoling, when you're 'ill, To think about th-j doctor's bill, . • And add unto the time you've lost.
