ROWING,

WAIHOLA REGATTA. DUNEDIN, March 23. At the Waihola regatta,, Otago won the Interprovincial Fours, beating Southland, the present holders of the Edmonds Challenge Shield, by a length and three-quar-ters. Time, 7min 58sec. U.B.C. THE DUSTIN SHIELD FOURS. Two heats for the Dustin Shield were rowed off last night, both races proving very close and interesting, one being won by about half a length, and the other resulting in a dead heat. The first heat was appropriately enough, between crews stroked respectively by W. Dustin and B. Prideaux. The boats were close together over the whole distance, a mile and a half. Half a mile from home Prideaux'e crew appeared to have a slight lead, but Dustin called on hie men for a spurt, and after a d'ngdong go his boat began to draw ahead, finally passing the post about half a length to the good. It was a splendid struggle, both crews being rowed right out, as may be judged from the fact that both stopped rowing, dead beat, a couple of lengths from home, and the boats simply drifted past the post. • It was half-past six and practically dead water with gathering darkness when the next heat was rowed between crews stroked by C. Drew and D. Corby. There was not much between the boats at the bend, though Drew had probably over threeparts of a length's advantage when bows were turned for home. At the stone groyne there was little alteration in the relative positions, and Drew still had about the rsamo lead a quarter of a mile from home. Corby here called on his men, and gradually they lessened the gap, but there was half a length separating the boats with only 100 yards to go,, and a win for Drew seemed assured. However, with a fine fin-il effort Corby's crew drove their boat along in great style over the last 30 yards or so, and shot up dead level as the

boats passed the post. II was a great pity that this race was rowed in semi-darkness, a 9 it was a splendid contest, both crcwe rowing we'll afld with thn utmost gameness to the end. Tlie'y will iiiGefc again on Thursday afternoon, wiieri & Wtist flifciting struggle should be witnessed. To-night Christiansen's arew will meet Poynter'a, the race to start as shortly after 5.30 o'clock as possible.
