NORTHERN MAORI ELECTORATE
Dr. Peter Buck Elected
The Northern Maori election to fill the seat rendered vacant by the death of the late Mr Hone Heke resulted in the return of Dr. Peter Buck, who wae returned by a majority of 1200 votes. Some small returns are still to come, but they cannot affect the result.
Dr. Peter Buck, the new Northern Maori representative, is one of the medical officers engaged under the Public Health Department- in carrying out work among the Maoris. He is 30 years of age, and belongs to the Te Atiawa tribe, which has its ancestral home in Taranaki. Hewas educated at Urenui Public School, and subsequently at Te Aute College, secured a native medical scholarship in 1899, and graduated at Otago University as M.B. Ch.B., 1904. He obtained experience as house surgeon in Dunedin Hospital in the following year, and secured his present appointment in 1906. He is regarded aa an extremely able man, a good speaker, and according to the Hon. Jamea Carroll (Native Minister) has the same aspirations and desires in regard to his race that are held by the Young Maori Party, of which, the late Hone Heke was a prominent member. His duties as a native medical officer brought him into close contact with those whose welfare he will now look after in Parliament. His election terminates his appointment under the Health Department.
